In 2003, a decision was made to create a new lake, Årslev EngsØ, by extending Brabrand Lake westward. They stopped the artificial draining of the surrounding meadows and by 2013, Årslev EngsØ was born, covering over 250 acres. This expansion has created even more space for nature to thrive and it’s hoped that endangered species like the Eurasian bittern and otter will make it their home. A hike or cycle around the entirety of Brabrand Lake is a treat for the senses. The landscape shifts from lush meadows and rustling reeds to dense, shady woods. And if you’re lucky, you might even spot a rare bird or two. Brabrand Lake is a Natura 2000 protected area, a testament to its rich biodiversity. Several birdwatching towers have been built around the lake, giving you a bird’s eye view of this thriving ecosystem.
