Seven hundred and thirty-three years. That’s how long Rolsø Kirke stood on this very spot before it was demolished. Now only Rolsø Kapel remains a testament to its past. This unassuming chapel is all that’s left of a much larger story.

Rolsø Kapel wasn’t always a chapel. It began life in the 1400s as the vestry of Rolsø Kirke a church that dated back to around 1175. Imagine the villagers making the long journey to attend services. This wasn’t just any church. It was the heart of the community in Rolsø a village that no longer exists.

In 1695 the squire of the nearby Rolsøgaard manor received permission to dismantle Rolsø village. This happened despite a law forbidding the destruction of villages. The squire’s friendship with the king might explain this unusual permission. The villagers lost their homes their church and their lives were irrevocably changed. Only the manor house and Rolsø Kirke survived.

However even the church’s days were numbered. By the late 1800s the majority of the congregation lived in Vrinners a village 2.5 kilometers away. This meant a five-kilometer round trip a significant distance to travel on foot or horseback. A mission house in Vrinners became a more convenient option for services. Eventually the church was torn down in 1908. Its contents including a Romanesque baptismal font dating from the 1100s were moved to the new church in Vrinners.

But the vestry this humble Rolsø Kapel was spared. It stands today surrounded by an old graveyard. Unlike most graveyards the old gravesites haven’t been disturbed. You can still see cast iron crosses with inscriptions. The gravestone of teacher Chr Johansen from 1897 even includes a surprisingly well-preserved photograph.

This seemingly small chapel is a living museum. It tells a story of faith resilience and the passage of time. A story of a village lost a church demolished and a chapel that endures. A powerful reminder of the past. Rolsø Kapel stands as a silent guardian of Rolsø’s history. Its quiet presence speaks volumes.
