Hidden in plain sight, Det Gamle Rådhus stands as a silent witness. It has seen centuries of Aarhus unfold. Det Gamle Rådhus isn’t just a beautiful building. It’s a time capsule. It holds the echoes of laughter, the whispers of secrets, and the weight of history. Built in 1857 by Ferdinand Thielemann, Det Gamle Rådhus originally served a triple purpose. It housed the city hall, a police station, and even a jail. Imagine the bustling activity within these walls. Picture the city council meetings upstairs, the police officers downstairs, and the prisoners held in the small building out back. The main entrance led to the city hall, with the mayor’s office and council chamber on the first floor. A separate entrance on the west side led to the police station. By 1906, Aarhus was growing rapidly. A new jail was built elsewhere, and the old jail space at Det Gamle Rådhus was converted into much-needed offices. The building underwent renovations. The main entrance was redesigned with a larger arch. Despite the changes, Det Gamle Rådhus eventually became too small for the expanding city administration. By the 1930s, plans were already underway for a new city hall. In 1941, the city administration moved to the current Aarhus Rådhus on Park Allé. Det Gamle Rådhus then became a police station. This wasn’t a peaceful time. During the German occupation, after their headquarters at Aarhus University were bombed in 1944, the Gestapo took over Det Gamle Rådhus. Imagine the tension in the air as this building, once a symbol of civic duty, became a center of oppression. After the war, the police returned. But the space was once again too small. After decades of planning and construction, a new police station was finally opened in 1983. Det Gamle Rådhus then briefly housed various local organizations before finding its current purpose. Since 1995, it has housed the Kvindemuseet (Women’s Museum) and Besættelsesmuseet (Occupation Museum). As you stand before Det Gamle Rådhus, take a moment. Appreciate the stories held within its walls. From city hall to police station to Gestapo headquarters to museum, Det Gamle Rådhus has witnessed the ebb and flow of life in Aarhus. Its red brick facade, granite details, and large arched entrance tell a story of resilience and transformation.
