Why is the Manden Statue here in Vennelystparken, seemingly out of place? It wasn’t always here. The Manden Statue, a bronze figure crafted by the Danish artist Svend Rathsack, has a fascinating past intertwined with a darker period in Aarhus’ history. This statue, you see, was one of six originally placed along the facade of Aarhus Idrætspark, a symbol of athleticism and human form. Sadly, during the Nazi occupation of Denmark in World War II, the Idrætspark suffered sabotage in 1943. The statues, including this one, were taken down. Their fate remained uncertain for a time. Eventually, this lone survivor, “Manden” – “The Man” – found a new home here in Vennelystparken. It serves as a quiet reminder of the resilience of art and spirit, even amidst times of conflict.
