Have you ever heard whispers of Snoghøj a place where history and legend intertwine? Snoghøj a charming southern suburb of Fredericia boasts a rich past. It began as a bustling ferry crossing connecting Jutland and Funen. The ferry service dates back centuries. A royal decree even granted permission for the ferry.

Lieutenant and ferryman Carl Lombardi built Snoghøj Ferry Farm in 1670. This was after the original buildings were destroyed during the Swedish wars. Peder Grib a sailor with the famous Tordenskiold became the ferryman in 1742. He was rewarded with the ferry concession after losing an arm in battle. The ferry farm changed hands through generations. It passed to Grib’s son-in-law Carl Lindam and later to Lindam’s son-in-law Gotfred Fibiger. Each owner left their mark on Snoghøj.

Hans Christian Riegels a renowned postal and transport manager purchased the ferry farm in 1839. He was a respected forester who landscaped the area. Riegels planted many rare trees. His widow Frederikke Christine von Heinen continued to oversee the farm until 1871 when it was sold. The farm’s history is intrinsically linked to the development of Snoghøj.

The final private owner of the ferry farm was Captain Walter Christmas. His wife Ragnhild Meldola née Weber generously donated land and a significant sum to establish Snoghøj Folk High School. This pivotal event shaped the identity of Snoghøj. The folk high school attracted students and contributed significantly to the town’s growth and unique character. It is the very reason Snoghøj developed as a town.

Today Snoghøj is a vibrant community of nearly 3000 people. It’s known for its folk high school. The Little Belt Bridge a remarkable feat of engineering connects Jutland and Funen starting in Snoghøj. The bridge stands as a testament to the region’s progress and links Snoghøj to a wider world.
