Have you ever wondered why a lighthouse standing so solitary and proud on a small island in the middle of the sea is a symbol of fierce rebellions and cunning plots? This is Hjelm Fyr, a beacon of history, standing sentinel on Hjelm, an islet in the Kattegat. Despite its small size, Hjelm Fyr is steeped in Danish history, and its history is far more thrilling than the lonely image it presents today. The island is a natural fortress built on the remains of a glacial moraine, a testament to the power of nature. In the late 13th century, after King Erik Klipping was assassinated in 1286, the island’s rugged beauty offered sanctuary to Marsk Stig, a prominent nobleman who was implicated in the murder. He sought refuge on Hjelm and built a fortified castle, using the island as a base for his rebellion. He, along with eight other noblemen, was declared an outlaw and sentenced to death. Stig and his men were aided by the Norwegian King Erik Priest Hater, who shared their desire to destabilize Denmark. They plundered Danish coastal towns and even built three fortifications – Fyrbakken, Kastelsbakken, and the smaller Skådebakken – forming a triangle on the island’s highest point, which is where Hjelm Fyr stands today. Hjelm Fyr was built in 1856 atop the ruins of Fyrbakken, the main fortress of Marsk Stig, and it served as a beacon for passing ships long after the rebels were defeated. The rebellion ended in 1306, when King Erik Menved, feeling strong enough to reclaim the island, sent a large force to Hjelm. The small Norwegian garrison surrendered after a brief battle, ending the island’s reign as a rebel stronghold.
