When did a simple parish church become a fortress? We’re standing before Malling Kirke, a seemingly peaceful house of worship that holds a surprisingly fortified past. Malling Kirke itself dates back to the 12th century. However, don’t let its tranquil presence fool you. Look closer, towards the southern side of the churchyard. There, you’ll find remnants of a robust, round tower constructed from sturdy fieldstones. This tower, built in the 13th century, wasn’t intended for bell-ringing or scenic views. It was a defensive bastion. This unassuming tower, once reaching a height of 14 meters, played a crucial role in a larger fortification plan. This entire churchyard was designed as a safe haven. Imagine deep moats encircling the church to the east, south, and west, their waters deterring any unwanted visitors. To the north, a natural defense – a marsh or lake – provided additional protection. The church itself, with its thick stone walls, would have been the last line of defense. It’s a stark reminder of the turbulent times in which Malling Kirke stood as a symbol of faith and resilience.
