What secrets does Blegind Kirke hold? This beautiful, white-washed Romanesque church stands before you, a testament to centuries of history. Blegind Kirke, with its unique tower raised on stilts and a porch, dates back to around 1200. Inside Blegind Kirke, remnants of the past whisper stories of those who came before. Epitaphs and gravestones commemorate former vicars. Above the triumphal arch, a crucifix, a relic of the Catholic era, hangs suspended in time. The centerpiece of the altarpiece is a captivating painting of the Emmaus wanderers, completed by A. Dorph in 1895. A simple renaissance pulpit, dating back to approximately 1640, features charming, almost naive portraits of the four evangelists and their symbols. A Romanesque baptismal font, crafted from granite and adorned with lions, stands as a symbol of faith from about 1700. A remarkable tale unfolds within Blegind Kirke’s walls, a story of hidden treasure. In 1901, during renovations of the church’s roof, a surprising discovery was made: 43 silver coins, concealed during the tumultuous Swedish War (1658-1660) by the vicar, Laurits Nielsen Torrild. The coins, a silent witness to the vicar’s life and the war’s upheaval, offer a glimpse into the past. Sadly, Vicar Torrild did not live to see the war’s end, passing away in 1659. Blegind Kirke underwent significant restoration in 1953-1954, further preserving its legacy. While Blegind Kirke is usually open only for services on special occasions, the sexton holds the key to unlock its stories.
