In 1882, a new chapter began for Holme Kirke. The old medieval church, worn by time, was deemed too costly to repair. Royal building inspector Vilhelm Theodor Walther oversaw the construction of a new church on the same site. Holme Kirke, as we see it today, was born. The new church served the growing population of Holme Parish in Højbjerg, a neighborhood south of Aarhus’ city center. Today, Holme Kirke remains a vital part of the community. It shares its pastoral duties with the nearby Lyseng Church, serving over 10,000 parishioners. While the new church rose in 1882, echoes of the past remained. Five Romanesque lintels and two string courses were incorporated into the new design, salvaged from the old church. Inside Holme Kirke, more treasures awaited. The altarpiece from 1637, pew ends from 1688, and a crucifix of the same era found a new home. A chalice from 1727, altar candlesticks from the late 17th century, and a Romanesque baptismal font, identical to one in Beder, also graced the interior. Even a votive ship, a frigate from around 1750, found its place. Later renovations in 1968-69 and again in 2012 further shaped Holme Kirke. The 1968 renovation significantly altered the layout. The choir was demolished and the nave extended, creating the large longhouse structure we see today. The more recent 2012 renovation focused on interior and exterior improvements, including new roofing for the side aisles, fresh paint, and refurbished seating. But the heart of Holme Kirke, its connection to the past and its service to the community, remains unchanged.
