Eighty meters long and eight meters high. That’s Kulbroen. A colossal steel skeleton against the Aarhus sky.

Welcome to Kulbroen. Once a vital artery of Aarhus’ industrial past this bridge carried coal from ships to the Aarhus Gasworks. Imagine the rumble of coal carts the clang of metal on metal. A symphony of industry now replaced by the gentle rustle of wind through the new plantings.

Built in 1950 Kulbroen was a key component of Midtkraft’s coke gasworks. This was the first of its kind in Denmark. The crane on this very bridge scooped coal into a crusher. Then the crushed coal went into ovens where it burned creating gas for the city. The burning process also produced coke used for heating in homes. Quite a multi-tasking marvel.

In 1969 a cracking gas plant replaced the coke gas plant. This used oil instead of coal. Gas production ended entirely in 1979. Environmental concerns prompted Midtkraft to stop using coal for electricity and district heating in 1995. The coal mountains and cranes gradually disappeared. Only two things remained: Turbinehallen now a restaurant and congress center and Kulbroen.

The Kulbroen’s past was industrial but its future is green. Inspired by New York’s High Line Park and Paris’ Promenade Plantée Kulbroen’s transformation is underway. It’s becoming a pedestrian walkway. Connecting the city center to the revitalized Sydhavnen district. It’s a testament to transformation and sustainable design.

The bridge features seventeen different FSC-certified tropical tree species. This demonstrates a commitment to environmentally friendly materials. The platform aims to inspire sustainable thinking. A fitting tribute to a bridge that has witnessed such a dramatic shift in Aarhus.

Today Kulbroen offers spectacular views of the Sydhavnen. This once-neglected industrial area is now a vibrant mix of residential and business areas. Come and experience this unique bridge. A place where industrial history meets innovative urban design. Feel the breeze enjoy the view. Let Kulbroen leave a lasting impression.
