Foldby Kirke

Gazing at Foldby Kirke, one might hear whispers of centuries past. Foldby Kirke stands on a hilltop just west of the old road from Skanderborg to Randers. The church is located on the outskirts of Foldby. Foldby Kirke isn’t just a picturesque landmark. It’s a time capsule. Its granite stones whisper tales dating back to the 1100s, a testament to the Romanesque style that once dominated the region. Imagine those early days, the rounded doorways on the north and south sides welcoming worshippers, sunlight streaming through small Romanesque windows. Inside, the flat wooden ceiling would have echoed with hymns and prayers. As centuries passed, Foldby Kirke evolved. In the late Middle Ages, a brick tower and a porch on the south side were added. These additions, crafted from humble munkesten (monk bricks), altered the church’s silhouette against the skyline. Look closely, and you’ll see the ribbed vaults that now grace the choir, nave, and tower room. The identity of Foldby Kirke’s original builders remains shrouded in mystery. By the 1200s, the church fell under the jurisdiction of Aarhus Cathedral Chapter. After the Reformation, it became crown property, a royal possession. Then, in 1661, Foldby Kirke was granted to Mogens Friis, eventually becoming part of the Frijsenborg estate in 1672. Foldby Kirke has been lovingly restored twice, once in the late 1800s and again between 1986 and 1988. Inside, the altarpiece, painted by Th. Martin Jensen in 1858, depicts a poignant scene of Christ and the Sinner. The altar railing bears the carved monograms of the Frijs family, a lasting mark of their patronage. Foldby Kirke has witnessed centuries of change, of shifting powers and evolving architectural styles. Yet, its core purpose has endured. It continues to serve the community, a beacon of faith and a repository of local history.
