Skivholme Kirke

Is there anything quite as peaceful as a country church? Skivholme Kirke, nestled between the villages of Skivholme and Herskind, is just that. This Romanesque beauty has stood watch over the rolling countryside for almost a thousand years. Imagine the stories these walls could tell! Skivholme Kirke was built in stages, beginning between 1050 and 1250. The nave and choir, constructed of local granite boulders and travertine, speak to the craftsmanship of that era. Later, the tower and porch were added, built with the distinctive red monk bricks popular in the late Middle Ages. Step inside, and you’ll find yourself transported back in time. Look up! The vaults are adorned with vibrant late Gothic murals dating back to the early 1500s. These well-preserved masterpieces, painstakingly restored in the late 19th century by J. Magnus Petersen, offer a glimpse into the artistic traditions of the Aarhus School. You may even notice remnants of even older murals, whispers of art from before the vaults were even built. The connection to Aarhus doesn’t end there. Look around. The rich decorations on the vaulted ceiling have a curious echo in the grand murals of Aarhus Cathedral. It’s almost as if the artists shared a secret language across the miles. Skivholme Kirke is more than just a building.
