Whispers of water, a forgotten melody. This is the Kleinopitzbach, a stream whose tale meanders through the history of Kleinopitz. Kleinopitzbach, a name as unassuming as the stream itself, yet it holds a connection to the very origins of this village. Northwest of Kleinopitz, the Kleinopitzbach begins its journey. Imagine the year 1215. Markgraf von Meissen commissions Boriwo de Tarant, steward of Tharandt Castle, to settle this land. A small Slavic settlement already existed, known as Apacz. But under Boriwo’s influence, it transforms, becoming the Kleinopitz we know today, its lifeblood flowing from the Kleinopitzbach. The stream witnessed the rise of the Kleinopitz Rittergut, the estate that shaped the village’s destiny for centuries. The Rittergut, first mentioned in records from 1349/50, wielded power over Kleinopitz, its influence as constant as the flow of the Kleinopitzbach. Generations of noble families, the von Alnpecks, the von Schillings, the Vogels, all left their mark on Kleinopitz. Later, the von Kőrbitz family held sway, their reign lasting into the 19th century. Through it all, the Kleinopitzbach flowed, a silent observer of changing fortunes. In 1550, the Rittergut’s owners brought Franconian settlers to Kleinopitz. A new district, Schletta, emerged on the border with Großopitz. Though the name Schletta faded from official use in 1876, the Kleinopitzbach continued its course, connecting the past to the present. The Kleinopitzbach saw the village grow. It witnessed the construction of schools, the first in 1824 on Mittelstraße, then another on Tharandter Straße in 1840, and finally, the school on Schulstraße in 1905. The stream flowed as Kleinopitz mourned its war dead, their names etched onto a memorial, first for the fallen of World War I, and later, for those lost in World War II. Kleinopitzbach’s waters reflect the modern village too, the repurposed prisoner-of-war camp, now a cultural center. The Jugend- und Gemeinschaftshaus, a testament to community spirit, stands as a symbol of Kleinopitz’s resilience, its future as steady as the flow of the Kleinopitzbach. The Kleinopitzbach, a small stream with a big story. It’s a story of origins, of power, of growth, and of resilience. It’s the story of Kleinopitz itself.
