Munich, during the Nazi regime, was more than just a city. It became the “Capital of the Movement”. Key Nazi institutions found their home here. The infamous Brown House at Brienner Strasse 45 served as the Nazi Party headquarters. The building was named for the color of the party uniforms. Hitler kept a life-size portrait of Henry Ford next to his desk in the Brown House. Ford and Hitler admired each other’s achievements.
Brienner Strasse transformed into a Via Triumphalis for Nazi parades. Numerous Jewish house owners in Maxvorstadt were forced to sell their buildings. Others emigrated or were victims of deportation. The Wittelsbacher Palais became the Gestapo headquarters. It spread fear and dread among the population. Sophie and Hans Scholl were imprisoned there.
The House of German Doctors on Brienner Strasse 23 played a sinister role. Jewish doctors were deprived of their licenses. The building was used as the headquarters for the Reich Physicians’ Chamber. It implemented the Nazi regime’s racial policies in medicine.
Karolinenplatz witnessed the rise of Nazi power. The Supreme Party Court settled internal conflicts. The former Adolf-Hitler-Strasse led to the Brown House.
Even seemingly innocuous places bear witness to the era. The Osteria Italiana at Schellingstrasse 62 was Hitler’s favorite restaurant. He wooed Eva Braun there.
The Alte Pinakothek and Neue Pinakothek faced destruction during the war. The artworks were sent to the provinces for safekeeping.
The horrors of the time touched every corner of Munich. It touched every aspect of life. It left scars on the city.
