Seen from here, the towering presence of Saint Dominics Roman Catholic Church is truly awe-inspiring. Formally named Our Lady of the Rosary and Saint Dominic, it stands as one of London’s largest Catholic churches. It is more than just a building. It’s a testament to faith, art, and history.

The Dominican Friars arrived in this area in 1861. They established a community in the Priory. Dominican Sisters also settled nearby. Lay Dominicans began meeting monthly at the Priory. The Priory itself opened in 1867. The Priory Church dates back to 1883. Countess Tasker was a great benefactor. Tasker Road is named in her memory.

In 1900, an interesting discovery was made. A pillar from the medieval London Black Friars was found. This Black Friars was the predecessor of Saint Dominics Priory. The pillar was moved to the east end of Saint Dominics Church.

The church’s design has a special connection to the Rosary prayer. Fourteen side chapels line the nave. Each chapel represents a Mystery of the Rosary. These mysteries are Joyful, Sorrowful, and Glorious. The fifteenth Mystery appears in the apse around the High Altar. It is the Coronation of Our Lady in Heaven. Saint Dominics was the first church to have distinct side chapels for each Mystery of the Rosary when completed in 1883. Each chapel has its own altar. Each altar features a stone-carved reredos. It depicts a particular Mystery of the Rosary. The Luminous Mysteries were added later by Pope John Paul II in 2002. They are commemorated in a Rosary Garden. The garden is behind the Lady Chapel.

The architect Charles Alban Buckler designed Saint Dominics. He was the son of John Chessell Buckler. Many consider this church his best work.

Saint Dominics continues to be a vibrant community. Friars and sisters serve the local parish. Pilgrims and visitors are drawn to the Shrine. Every Saturday evening, a torchlit Rosary Procession occurs in May and October. This event attracts visitors from across the diocese.

Two memorials within Saint Dominics honor those who died in World War I. A stone tablet near the main door lists names of fallen soldiers from the area. The lettering was carved by Eric Gill. A statue of Joan of Arc marks the death of a soldier killed at Ypres in 1915.

In 2016, Saint Dominics Church gained a special designation. It was inaugurated as a diocesan shrine. Its mission is to promote the Rosary. Saint Dominics Priory Church remains a beacon of faith. It showcases the beauty of religious devotion. It is a place where history and spirituality intertwine. It welcomes all who seek solace and inspiration.
