Del Monte United Methodist Church. A beacon of faith in Quezon City, Metro Manila. Let’s unravel the story woven into its very foundation. Our journey begins not here, but in the heart of Manila, at a church known as Knox United Methodist Church. It was there, on August 28, 1898, that the first Protestant worship service in the Philippines took place, led by Reverend George C. Stull. This event marked the genesis of Methodism in the country. The congregation at Knox UMC eventually birthed two distinct groups: one English-speaking and one Spanish-speaking. The church grew, becoming the first permanent Methodist structure in the Philippines. It started as a small chapel on Rizal Avenue, then called Calle Cervantes. In 1906, a grander church replaced it, overseen by Reverend M.A. Rader. Initially called “First Methodist Church,” it was renamed Knox Memorial Methodist Church to honor Henry Knox, a generous benefactor. The church stood as a testament to faith. It weathered World War II. During the war’s aftermath, it became a sanctuary for the congregation of Central United Methodist Church. Knox UMC saw significant expansion in the latter half of the 20th century. The sanctuary we see today was completed in 1953, followed by Sunday school facilities in 1964. Now, let’s return to Del Monte United Methodist Church in Quezon City. While our knowledge specifically about Del Monte UMC is limited, we know it’s connected to this rich history of Methodism in the Philippines. Just as Knox UMC was a testament to the burgeoning Protestant faith in the Philippines, so too is Del Monte UMC a continuation of that legacy. It stands as a symbol of faith, resilience, and the enduring spirit of community.
