What lies beyond this unassuming entrance? Webb Chapel Cemetery. A place where the echoes of history linger and the stories of early settlers are etched in stone. Webb Chapel Cemetery stands as a testament to the pioneering spirit of those who came before us. It all began in 1844 when Isaac B. Webb and his wife, Mary, arrived in this area, then part of the Peters Colony. They were devout Methodists. In 1845, they helped establish the first Methodist society in Dallas County.
The community flourished, and in 1846, a log structure known as Webb Chapel was erected nearby. This humble building served as both a place of worship and the first school in the settlement. However, tragedy struck in 1847 when the Webbs’ seven-year-old daughter, Alice, passed away. She became the first soul laid to rest in the churchyard, forever linking the Webb family to this sacred ground. As time marched on, the cemetery became the final resting place for many pioneers and their families, their lives interwoven with the growth of North Texas.
The names etched on these weathered headstones tell tales of hardship, resilience, and the unbreakable bonds of family. Take a moment to reflect on the lives lived, the dreams pursued, and the legacies left behind. Webb Chapel Cemetery stands as a poignant reminder that history is not just a collection of dates and names. It is the collective story of individuals who shaped the world we know today. Their spirit lives on, whispering through the ages.
