Imagine a sliver of land, no bigger than a lozenge, resting in the River Thames. This is Grand Junction Isle. It’s a place steeped in history and quiet charm.

Grand Junction Isle sits just above Molesey Lock, near Sunbury-on-Thames. Sunbury Court Island is nearby, much larger and closer to the north bank. Yet, Grand Junction Isle has its own story to tell.

At its widest, Grand Junction Isle stretches only 35 meters long and 15 meters wide. Despite its size, it holds six small weekend chalets, each with its own mooring space. These chalets look like garden summerhouses. A footbridge connects the island to the residential area of Sunbury on the northern bank.

The name “Grand Junction Isle” comes from the Grand Junction Waterworks Company. This company was one of three operating the Hampton Water Works. The works straddled the Hampton/Sunbury border. The border was even moved to accommodate the westernmost reservoir within Hampton.

The company built a water intake on Grand Junction Isle. This intake fed the reservoir and other facilities. These included filter beds and advanced treatment works. Thames Water now owns and operates these works.

Before it was Grand Junction Isle, it was known as “Purvis Ait.” Today, The Environment Agency owns the island. Grand Junction Isle is a quiet reminder of the area’s industrial past. It shows how water management shaped the landscape.

The island offers a tranquil escape on the Thames. The trees provide a green canopy. The gentle flow of the river creates a soothing atmosphere.

From the footbridge, you can see the island’s simple beauty. The chalets offer glimpses of weekend life on the water. The island’s small size makes it feel intimate and secluded.

Grand Junction Isle might be small, but it plays a vital role in the river’s ecosystem. It offers a habitat for wildlife. It also provides a green space for people to enjoy.

Next time you’re near Sunbury-on-Thames, take a moment to appreciate Grand Junction Isle. Think about its history as a waterworks site. Consider its present as a peaceful island retreat. It is a unique spot on the River Thames. It blends industry, nature, and leisure.
