Have you ever imagined a place transformed? Step into Petershausen-Ost a district brimming with history. Right here in Konstanz you stand where a Roman settlement once thrived. Imagine its bustling life centuries ago then abandoned. Later Reichenau Abbey held sway over this land.

Petershausen-Ost owes its name to Petershausen Abbey. Bishop Gebhard of Constance founded this imperial abbey. He established a double village. The upper village east of the monastery was called Sternenviertel or Star Quarter. A lower village housed monastery servants southwest of the abbey. These villages developed separately but eventually fell under Constance’s influence. By 1600 Petershausen-Ost became a Constance suburb.

The abbey’s secularization in 1802 marked a turning point. The monastery fell into disrepair. Its buildings became a military hospital then barracks. The Baden State Railway’s arrival in 1863 changed Petershausen-Ost forever. This spurred growth particularly in Petershausen-Ost. Constance’s southward expansion was halted by the Swiss border. Therefore population growth centered around the former monastery. New homes and promenades lined Lake Constance’s shore. A new school Theodor-Heuss-Realschule opened in 1912. A church planned in 1913 was delayed by war and inflation finally opening 17 years later.

Tragically the Star Quarter disappeared in 1936. It was demolished for a wider road and a railway underpass. Only Sternenplatz a traffic junction remains as a memory. Petershausen-Ost’s story is one of transformation. From Roman settlement to abbey to modern suburb it’s a testament to time’s relentless march. It’s a reminder of what was and what is.

The history of Petershausen-Ost resonates through its streets and buildings. It is a place where ancient echoes mingle with modern life a testament to enduring resilience. This is Petershausen-Ost a story etched in stone and told in whispers.
