“CP,” an abbreviation for Cerebral Palsy. It is a term used to describe a group of disorders. These disorders affect a person’s ability to move and maintain posture.

‘Cerebral’ means of the brain. ‘Palsy’ refers to impairment of motor function. It means problems with using the muscles. Cerebral Palsy affects body movements. It impacts muscle control and muscle tone. Coordination and balance are also affected. CP is the most common childhood physical disability. There are an estimated 17 million people worldwide living with CP.

Cerebral Palsy is caused by abnormal brain development. It can also be caused by injury to a baby’s brain. This occurs before, during, or after birth. Research has revealed certain risk factors for CP. Doctors classify CP by the main type of movement disorder involved. This depends on which brain area is affected. The three types of CP are as follows.

Spastic CP is the most common type. Approximately 70-80% of people with CP have this condition. Muscles are stiff and difficult to stretch. Dyskinetic CP involves uncontrolled, involuntary movements. Ataxic CP means there is poor coordination of movement. It also involves unsteadiness and shakiness. Some children have only one type of movement problem. Others have a mix of these movement problems.

The severity of symptoms varies from person to person. It depends on the extent of the damage to the brain. Some patients with Cerebral Palsy experience mild symptoms. Others have more severe symptoms. These require more significant medical intervention.

There is no cure for CP. However, treatment can improve the quality of life and well-being. Treatment includes medications and braces. Therapy is also a common treatment. Early intervention should begin as soon as a diagnosis has been made. It can result in significant improvements. Gross motor skills can improve. Fine motor, communication, and oral-motor skills can also improve.

Botulinum toxin injections can reduce Cerebral Palsy symptoms. They relax spastic or tight muscles. When injected, botulinum toxin blocks the release of acetylcholine. Acetylcholine is responsible for muscle contraction. By inhibiting this chemical, the muscle is allowed to relax. This results in reduced spasticity and improved movement.

The best candidates for botulinum toxin injections are patients. These patients suffer from moderate to severe spasticity. It is associated with Cerebral Palsy. These injections help reduce spasticity. They can also improve motor control. They reduce pain and discomfort caused by stiff muscles.

A patient with Cerebral Palsy is eligible for PBS-subsidized botulinum toxin injections. If they have dynamic equinus foot deformity and moderate to severe spasticity, then they are eligible. This spasticity must affect their daily activities and quality of life. Patients must be assessed by a specialist. The specialist must be experienced in the use of botulinum toxin.

The procedure typically lasts between 15 and 30 minutes. It depends on the number of muscles targeted for treatment. By reducing muscle tension and promoting greater mobility, botulinum toxin injections can help patients with CP. They can manage their condition better and achieve greater independence.

Botulinum toxin injections are not a cure. However, they are very effective. They alleviate muscle spasticity and improve mobility. The effects of botulinum toxin injections usually last for three to six months. Then another injection is required. Some possible benefits from botulinum toxin injection include improved range of motion. It can also reduce pain. It may also increase participation in activities.
