What stories could these walls tell? Right here in front of us is the Centerville Road Church of Christ. A beacon of faith and community, the Centerville Road Church of Christ actually began its journey as the Broadway Church of Christ. The year was 1958, a time of great change and growth for Garland. A group of 26 faithful families from the Eighth and Austin Street church, seeking a spiritual home closer to their community, established this new congregation. They started humbly, renting a space on Belt Line Road. Their dedication was unwavering. Within a remarkably short time, the congregation flourished, nearly doubling in size, and with remarkable self-sufficiency they erected their first sanctuary on Broadway. The land, a generous gift from the Eighth and Austin Street Church. The Broadway Church of Christ blossomed under the leadership of their chosen preacher, William C. Hatcher. As the years unfolded, they continued to expand their reach, planting the seeds for new congregations around Garland and beyond. This spirit of growth and outreach continued even as the church faced a significant challenge when the city announced plans to extend Dairy Road. Their very parking lot was in the path of progress. Facing this hurdle with their characteristic resilience, they found a temporary home at Dallas Christian High School in Mesquite. For two years they worshipped there, their faith undeterred, their community bonds strengthened, even welcoming new members during this time. Finally, in December of 2000, they gathered in their newly constructed home on East Centerville Road, a testament to their enduring faith. The Centerville Road Church of Christ stands today as a symbol of resilience, faith, and a commitment to community that stretches back over 60 years.
