Ever wondered about a place that pioneered groundbreaking transplants in Asia? Welcome to the National Kidney and Transplant Institute. This isn’t just a hospital. It’s a beacon of hope. A testament to medical innovation.
Right here on East Avenue in Quezon City stands the National Kidney and Transplant Institute. Established on January 16 1981 it began as the National Kidney Foundation of the Philippines. It later became the National Kidney Institute. Its name finally changed to the National Kidney and Transplant Institute. The NKTI as it’s known holds a prominent place in Philippine medical history. It occupies a sprawling 58899 square meter lot. This large area houses three interconnected buildings. The Main Building houses administration and many departments. The Annex Building includes the Marcos Wing a state-of-the-art addition.
The NKTI is more than just brick and mortar. It’s a place where medical miracles happen. Think about this The NKTI performed the first double kidney and pancreas transplant in Asia. This was a huge achievement back in March 1988. Imagine the skill and dedication it required. They also performed the first kidney and liver transplant in Asia. This happened in September 1990. They were pioneers in bone marrow transplantation too becoming the first in the Philippines to do so in August 1990. The Institute continuously strives for excellence. It has maintained various healthcare programs like HOPE the Human Organ Preservation Effort. Another program VBDP is the Voluntary Blood Donation Program. It also runs REDCOP the Renal Disease Control Program and TQM Total Quality Management.
In 2003 the NKTI became the first government hospital in the Philippines to receive ISO certification. This is a mark of consistent high quality. In 2024 President Bongbong Marcos launched the country’s first Lung Transplant Program. The NKTI played a significant role in this initiative.
The National Kidney and Transplant Institute is more than a hospital. It is a symbol of hope. It is a testament to the dedication and skill of Filipino medical professionals. It is a place where lives are saved and transformed. This is a legacy of innovation and compassion. A legacy that continues to this day.
