Amid the bustling energy of Chicago’s Belmont-Cragin neighborhood stands Saint Patrick High School. Do you hear the echoes of countless young men who have walked these halls since 1861? Saint Patrick High School is more than just bricks and mortar. It’s a living testament to tradition, brotherhood, and the transformative power of education. Saint Patrick High School is the oldest all-boys Catholic high school in Chicago. Its history intertwines with the city’s own growth. Founded by the Christian Brothers, the school originally stood near Adams Street and Des Plaines. As Chicago expanded, so did Saint Patrick. In 1953, the school moved to its current location on Belmont and Austin avenues. The need for more space was immediate, leading to the construction of the iconic “Round Building”. This cylindrical addition became a symbol of the school’s adaptability and growth. Over the years, Saint Patrick High School has continuously evolved. In 1991, it embraced the digital age, transforming a floor into a cutting-edge computer center. Later renovations added an atrium, a theater, music facilities, a media center, and a second gymnasium. More recently, the school has invested in an Engineering lab and the Barret Learning Resource Center, complete with a redesigned library and an E-Sports room. Saint Patrick’s commitment to academics is unwavering. It offers a robust curriculum with College Prep, Honors, and AP or Dual Credit courses. Students can tailor their academic journey by choosing different course levels for various subjects. The school also nurtures a vibrant student life, from its nationally competitive chess team and FIRST Robotics Competition to its award-winning theatre department. Saint Patrick High School’s athletic legacy is equally impressive. Home to the Shamrocks, the school competes in the East Suburban Catholic Conference. Their baseball team was state runner-up in 2005-2006, while the water polo team achieved the same feat in 2002-2003. And let’s not forget the 1932 national basketball championship, a victory snatched from the jaws of uncertainty when the Shamrocks, originally uninvited, stepped in as a last-minute substitute. From its humble beginnings to its modern-day vibrancy, Saint Patrick High School has shaped the lives of countless young men. It’s a place where faith, tradition, and brotherhood intertwine. As you stand here, imagine the generations who have passed through these doors. They carry with them the values instilled by Saint Patrick High School. A legacy that continues to resonate in the heart of Chicago.
