Feel the cool breeze from Lady Bird Lake. Auditorium Shores at Town Lake Metropolitan Park welcomes you. This vibrant urban park nestled in downtown Austin boasts a rich history.
Originally opened in 1959 alongside the Palmer Auditorium the park’s name reflects its location. It sits between the former auditorium and the lake’s shore. Auditorium Shores is more than just a green space. It’s a stage for countless events.
South by Southwest and Fun Fun Fun Fest have graced its expansive lawns. The park hosted the Austin Aqua Festival in the 1980s and 90s. A memorable Gregg Allman performance was even recorded here in 1987 for the King Biscuit Flower Hour. The park also hosts events for the Austin Food and Wine Festival.
But Auditorium Shores’ story extends beyond its lively events. A poignant memorial stands here. It honors Stevie Ray Vaughan a legendary Austin bluesman. He played many concerts at this very spot. The park is also known for its off-leash dog area. However recent redevelopments have unfortunately reduced its size. This caused some controversy among dog owners.
The park has experienced its share of challenges. Funding difficulties plagued its development. In 1998 a tax on local car rentals was intended to finance improvements. This included the construction of the Palmer Events Center. However financial mismanagement redirected funds. This delayed crucial renovations for years.
Despite these obstacles the park continues to thrive. In 2015 a section was renamed Vic Mathias Shores. This honored a prominent Austin figure who co-founded the Austin Aqua Festival. Private donations and grants have aided in improvements. These include a new dog play area and the Alliance Children’s Garden.
Auditorium Shores at Town Lake Metropolitan Park is a testament to Austin’s spirit. It’s a place where music history echoes. It’s a place where community spirit thrives. It’s a place to relax and enjoy Austin’s breathtaking skyline. Enjoy your visit to this iconic park.
