The year is 1168. A powerful figure, Taira no Kiyomori, stands on the shores of Itsukushima, gazing across the shimmering waters. He envisions a magnificent shrine, a testament to his devotion to the three daughters of Susano-o no Mikoto: Ichikishimahime no mikoto, Tagorihime no mikoto, and Tagitsuhime no mikoto. This shrine, Itsukushima Shrine, would become his legacy, a symbol of the might of the Taira clan, and a place of worship for seafarers seeking the deities’ blessings for safe passage. Itsukushima Shrine, nestled on the edge of the sacred island of Itsukushima (known to many as Miyajima), is no ordinary place of worship. It is a symphony of nature and architecture, a testament to the belief that the island itself is a god. To preserve this sanctity, Kiyomori decreed that the shrine should appear to float, separate from the land, a vision brought to life through a series of pier-like structures extending over the tide-swept bay. The most striking feature, the iconic torii gate, painted a vibrant vermillion, stands tall, seemingly suspended over the water. At high tide, the illusion is breathtaking – Itsukushima Shrine, a shimmering mirage, beckoning pilgrims to approach by boat through the torii, a symbolic gateway to a sacred realm. As you stand before Itsukushima Shrine today, imagine the ebb and flow of centuries past. Picture the elegantly attired courtiers of the Heian period, their boats gliding through the torii, the air alive with the sounds of chanting and ancient rituals. The spirit of Kiyomori’s vision endures. Itsukushima Shrine, with its harmonious blend of natural beauty and architectural grandeur, continues to captivate and resonate with a timeless, ethereal allure.
