Picture yourself standing on the edge of Rue de Tournon, a street etched with history and romance. Just a stone’s throw from the vibrant Luxembourg Gardens, it’s a place where the past whispers secrets in the wind. Here, in the 6th arrondissement, a stroll through time unfolds.

This street has worn many names over centuries. It was once called “ruelle de Saint-Sulpice” in 1517, then “ruelle du Champ de Foire” and “rue du Marché aux Chevaux”, reflecting its role in the bustling life of Paris. But it’s known today as Rue de Tournon, a name born in 1541, honoring Cardinal François de Tournon, a powerful figure who, among other things, was Abbot of Saint-Germain-des-Près, a nearby abbey.

Here, on Rue de Tournon, a unique mix of old meets new. The grand buildings, some boasting elegant balconies and ornate facades, stand in stark contrast to the charming little shops selling souvenirs and trinkets. Walk along, and on the left, you’ll encounter the former home of Marie-Anne Lenormand, a famous fortune teller. They say she predicted the future for numerous figures of the Empire – including Empress Josephine. It was in this very house, at number 5, that she breathed her last in 1843.

Further down the street, at number 19, lies a different kind of legacy. Here lived John Paul Jones, an American hero of the Revolution, whose last days were spent on this very street. Sadly, he met his fate in this house in 1792.

But Rue de Tournon holds more than just historical figures. It’s a place where words of wisdom linger, where creative minds once dwelled. The famous poet, Jacques Prévert, spent a year here in 1910, as a 10-year-old boy residing at number 5.

As you meander along Rue de Tournon, let your imagination take flight. Picture the carriages that once traversed this street, the aristocrats who resided in these grand residences, and the revolutionary ideas that sparked within these walls. It’s a street where layers of history weave together, presenting a tapestry of stories waiting to be discovered.
