Can you imagine a bog surviving, practically untouched, for centuries, right in the heart of a bustling city? Here at Gammelmose, that’s exactly what happened. Gammelmose, meaning “Old Bog” in Danish, is a unique slice of wilderness nestled between Vangede and Kongens Lyngby, in the northern suburbs of Copenhagen. Gammelmose isn’t just any bog. It holds the distinction of being the oldest protected natural habitat in Denmark. Its story begins in the first half of the 19th century. The Bernstorff Estate, which owned Gammelmose, extensively harvested peat from the bog. The peat resources were almost depleted. Then King Christian VIII, the owner of the estate, stepped in. In 1844, he issued a royal decree protecting Gammelmose. His motivation wasn’t purely conservationist. He envisioned Gammelmose as a living laboratory. Scientists could study how peat forms naturally and how a depleted bog recovers. This forward-thinking act makes Gammelmose a landmark in Danish environmental history. The protection of Gammelmose was further solidified in 1918. It became the first location protected under Denmark’s new Nature Protection Act. Today, Gammelmose is recognized internationally as an IUCN category IV protected area. Gammelmose’s journey wasn’t without its challenges. The construction of the Ring 3 motorway unfortunately claimed three hectares of the bog. For many years, Gammelmose remained closed to the public. Only researchers were allowed access to its delicate ecosystem. However, in 2008, Gammelmose opened to the public. Designated paths now allow visitors to experience the unique landscape while preserving the bog’s fragile environment. As you walk along these paths, imagine the scientists who have studied this bog for over a century. Picture the generations of plants and animals that have thrived here, undisturbed by the urban sprawl just beyond the trees. Gammelmose stands as a testament to the power of conservation and a reminder of the natural wonders that can persist even in the most unexpected places.
