In 2009, a seed of faith was planted in Chicago. This seed blossomed into the Iglesia Cristiana Roca de Esperanza. The church was founded by Raùal and Heidi Urcino. They led the congregation with unwavering dedication. For years, the Iglesia Cristiana Roca de Esperanza shared a space with another Mennonite church. This Afro-American congregation was located in Chicago’s Central Park area. Together, they served the Latino immigrant community. The COVID-19 pandemic brought many challenges. The church transitioned to online services. Some members returned to their home countries. Others, sadly, were lost to the virus. Through it all, the Iglesia Cristiana Roca de Esperanza persevered. Their faith remained strong. In 2022, the congregation found a temporary home. They held Sunday afternoon services at the First Church of the Brethren in Chicago. Some services remained online. The pastors, Raùal and Heidi, yearned to return to in-person gatherings. They believe in the power of community. They prayed for a new space, particularly in the western suburbs of Chicago. They hoped to find a place in Bensenville, Melrose Park, Northlake, Franklin Park, or Elmhurst. They dreamed of once again worshipping together, as a family, at the Iglesia Cristiana Roca de Esperanza.
