“A school with so many names, it’s almost like it couldn’t decide on one!” chuckled a man walking past, his words catching my ear. He gestured towards the Gymnasium am Markt, a stately building with a history as layered as its architecture. The Gymnasium am Markt, you see, wasn’t always known by this name. Founded in 1882, it began its life as the Evangelische höhere Privattöchterschule – a name that reflects its origin as a private school for girls. Over the years, it transformed, evolving with the times and reflecting the changing landscape of education and society itself. From Gehobene evangelische Mädchenschule to Städtisches Lyzeum, then Oberschule für Mädchen and Städtisches neusprachliches Progymnasium für Mädchen, it finally embraced co-education in 1973, becoming the Gymnasium am Markt we know today. Each name tells a story, a chapter in the long and fascinating life of this institution. This constant evolution is mirrored in its structure. The Gymnasium am Markt is a beautiful blend of old and new. The original 1907 building, with its grand aula, stands as a testament to the school’s enduring legacy, currently housing the upperclassmen. Over the years, the school has grown, embracing modernity with new wings added in 1966, 1970, and 1981. Today, these newer sections bustle with the energy of the lower and middle school students. The most recent addition, a modern structure completed in 1998, houses cutting-edge facilities, including computer labs and even an astronomy dome. The Gymnasium am Markt is a living testament to the belief that education, like life itself, is a journey of constant growth and transformation.
