Established in 1955 Kadıköy Anatolian High School stands proudly. Its history is rich. It began not as a school but as a building. The Franciscan Capuchin Order built it before World War I. They inhabited it for years. Years later the Ministry of Education wanted a high school in Kadıköy. Long negotiations with the Capuchins followed. Finally in 1955 Kadıköy Maarif opened its doors.
The school’s early years were humble. It wasn’t always the prestigious institution it is today. It expanded over time. A dormitory was added in 1968. Two more buildings came in 1976 and 1977. At one point it was the largest high school in the Balkans. A remarkable achievement. A testament to its growing reputation.
The name changed. The Ministry of Education’s new structure prompted a change. Kadıköy Maarif Koleji became Kadıköy Anadolu Lisesi. Its curriculum also evolved. It initially had a two-year English prep period. Then a unique curriculum followed. In 2006 it adopted a standard four-year program. This included a one-year prep period.
Kadıköy Anatolian High School isn’t just about academics. It boasts a vibrant extracurricular life. Students participate in various clubs and sports. There are clubs dedicated to literature music and even Kemalist ideas. Sports like basketball and volleyball are popular. The school even has a juggling club. Its alumni are diverse and accomplished. Some have become actors musicians authors and even politicians. Notable alumni include Can Gürzap and Mehmet Ufuk Uras.
