The Church of God in Christ finds its roots in the Pentecostal movement. This movement highlights the events of the Day of Pentecost. On this day, the Holy Spirit descended upon believers. They received the gift of speaking in tongues. This supernatural event is a cornerstone of their faith.
Elder Charles Harrison Mason founded the Church of God in Christ. He was born in 1864 near Memphis. He experienced conversion in 1878. Mason began his ministry in 1893. He preached the message of holiness. He drew inspiration from II Timothy 2:1-3.
In 1895, Mason met key figures. They were C.P. Jones, J.E. Jeter, and W.S. Pleasant. Together, they conducted a revival in 1896. The revival led to conversions and healings. It emphasized sanctification.
Because of the teachings, some Baptist churches closed their doors. In 1897, Mason preached from the courthouse entrance. Later, a warehouse became their meeting place. It became the first Church of God in Christ. Despite shots fired into the congregation, no one died.
The need to organize led to the church’s establishment. It would emphasize sanctification. It would emphasize the Holy Spirit. Sixty charter members formed the Pentecostal body. They called it the “Church of God.”
The name “Church of God in Christ” was divinely inspired. Mason received it while walking in Little Rock. The scripture 1 Thessalonians 2:14 supported this revelation. The brethren unanimously agreed to the name.
In 1907, Mason attended a revival in Los Angeles. He sought the Holy Ghost. He received it. He began to speak in tongues. This experience transformed his ministry.
Mason’s new Pentecostal experience caused division. Some leaders questioned the speaking in tongues. The General Assembly withdrew fellowship from Mason. He then gathered believers in Memphis. They formed the first Pentecostal General Assembly. Mason was chosen as the General Overseer.
Under Mason’s leadership, the Church of God in Christ grew. It expanded across the United States. It also expanded internationally. The church became a global movement.
