Could a supermarket magnate build a medieval village? In the outskirts of Buenos Aires, nestled in González Catán, lies Campanópolis, a testament to one man’s extraordinary vision. Campanópolis isn’t your typical tourist attraction. It’s a whimsical blend of architectural styles, a place where recycled materials find new life. Antonio Campana, the visionary behind Campanópolis, dreamed of creating something unique. After a cancer diagnosis in 1987, he poured his energy into building this eccentric village. Campana, a supermarket entrepreneur with no formal architectural training, began purchasing remnants from demolished buildings. He collected doors, windows, gates, columns, and anything that sparked his imagination.
Campanópolis began to rise from a former landfill, transformed by Campana’s vision. He envisioned a medieval-inspired village, complete with cobblestone streets, gothic arches, and stained glass windows. The result is a captivating blend of old and new. Modern elements like traffic lights and clocks coexist with medieval-style houses and a Dutch windmill. Campanópolis even boasts its own “museums,” showcasing Campana’s eclectic collections of antique objects. The Museo de las Rejas, for example, houses an impressive assortment of wrought iron railings.
Campana’s unique approach extended to the construction process itself. He would often halt construction until he found the perfect salvaged piece to fit his vision. He designed houses around specific columns or windows, letting the materials dictate the form. Campanópolis evolved organically, a testament to Campana’s improvisational spirit. Sadly, Campana passed away in 2008, leaving behind an unfinished masterpiece. His children now maintain Campanópolis, preserving his whimsical legacy. Unfinished structures remain, a poignant reminder of Campana’s ever-evolving vision. Campanópolis is a place of surprises. You might stumble upon a house with a roof made of doors, or a room filled with mismatched windows. It’s a place to get lost in, to wander through its winding streets and discover hidden corners. Campanópolis is more than just a theme park. It’s a testament to the power of imagination and the beauty of repurposing the past.
