Gazing upon St Mary the Virgin, imagine the echoes of centuries past. St Mary the Virgin stands proudly in Wanstead, East London. It’s a Grade I listed building, a true gem in Redbridge. The current church, built between 1787 and 1790, replaced a medieval predecessor. The land was generously donated by James Tylney-Long. Architect Thomas Hardwick designed this elegant structure. Its foundation stone was laid in 1787, followed by a grand reception at the magnificent Wanstead House. The church was consecrated in 1790 by Beilby Porteus, the Bishop of London. Sadly, the old medieval church was demolished. However, a significant monument to Josiah Child was preserved and moved to the new St Mary the Virgin. The churchyard holds its own fascinating stories. Sculptor Joseph Wilton and Vice-Admiral Robert Plampin rest here. Their presence adds another layer of historical significance to St Mary the Virgin. St Mary the Virgin stands as a testament to time. It whispers stories of bygone eras.
