Across the vibrant canvas of San Francisco, MURAL 2 whispers stories of the city’s artistic soul. MURAL 2 stands as a testament to San Francisco’s enduring love affair with murals. This art form has graced the city’s buildings since the 18th century. The very first mural, a hidden gem at Mission Dolores, dates back to 1791. Ohlone artists painted this inaugural piece. Sadly, it remained concealed behind the church altar for over two centuries. In 2004, historian and artist Ben Wood, along with archaeologist Eric Blind, brought this historical artwork back to life through digital recording.

MURAL 2 is part of a larger narrative woven into the city’s fabric. The 1930s witnessed a surge of mural art during the Great Depression. Coit Tower became a canvas for 25 artists, who created 27 murals. These New Deal murals captured the era’s spirit. They depicted laborers, transportation, and industries of the time. Even the renowned Mexican artist Diego Rivera contributed. His first three US murals found a home in San Francisco. After a period of quiet, the mural movement resurfaced in the 1970s with a fresh style. Artists used their work to express imagination, advocate for social change, and celebrate community. Las Mujeres Muralistas, a group of Latina artists in the Mission District, led this resurgence.

The Mission District itself is a testament to the power of murals. It boasts over 500 murals, almost half of the city’s total, according to SF Mural Arts. Balmy Alley, the birthplace of Las Mujeres Muralistas’ first mural, still showcases a vibrant collection. Murals adorn walls, garage doors, and fences throughout the alley. The collaborative and community-driven spirit of Mission District murals is embodied in the Precita Eyes Muralists Association. Founded in 1977, this organization continues to create, restore, and celebrate murals across San Francisco. MURAL 2, like its counterparts across the city, adds a unique stroke to the vibrant tapestry of San Francisco’s art scene. From the Mission to Haight-Ashbury, Chinatown to the Tenderloin, these murals reflect the city’s diverse spirit and artistic heart.
