“The Machu Picchu of Japan.” Have you ever heard that phrase before? Right here in Hiroshima, we have a place that echoes that sentiment. 武田山, Mount Takeda, might not boast ancient Incan ruins. But its own form of historical grandeur is no less captivating. Imagine, if you will, a castle perched atop this very peak. Not just any castle. This was Takeda Castle, a fortress reaching towards the heavens, built in 1443. For centuries, it stood watch over the land, a silent sentinel bearing witness to the ebb and flow of history. From its strategic vantage point, the castle played a crucial role in the tumultuous events of feudal Japan. It saw conquests and changes in leadership. In the late 16th century, the legendary Toyotomi Hideyoshi, on his quest to unite Japan, brought Takeda Castle under his control. The castle eventually met its end, not through siege or battle, but through a tragic act of loyalty. After the pivotal Battle of Sekigahara in 1600, the castle’s last lord, Akamatsu Hirohide, though on the winning side, was wrongly accused of treachery. Choosing honor over shame, he committed seppuku, and Takeda Castle, as if mirroring its master’s fate, was abandoned. Today, although the castle itself is gone, the skeletal remains of its stone foundations and ramparts still cling tenaciously to the mountaintop. They stand as a testament to the enduring power of the past. While the structure may be in ruins, the view. That is something truly special.
