Senator Daniel Dougherty’s legacy echoes through Dougherty Park. This Chicago park isn’t just a green space. It’s a testament to community spirit and a senator’s dedication. Dougherty Park, located at 9336 S. Kingston Ave., holds a special place in the Calumet Heights neighborhood. The park covers over three acres. It offers a baseball field, a perfect spot for families to enjoy a day out. The history of Dougherty Park is intertwined with the South East Little League. In 1953, this league built a baseball facility here for the local youth. Two ballfields, one for junior and one for standard play, were nestled within the Mill Gate neighborhood. Land for recreation was precious in this developed area. In 1970, the Little League generously donated the 2.7-acre site to the Chicago Park District. The agreement stipulated the continued use of a ballfield for the South East Little League and prohibited the park’s resale for development. The park’s name honors Daniel Dougherty (1905-1976). He was an Illinois State Senator who served the district for over two decades. Senator Dougherty also held the position of director of finance for the Cook County Circuit Courts from 1941. His dedication to public service is reflected in the park that bears his name. Dougherty Park stands as a tribute to his commitment and the community’s love for baseball.
