Synonymous with the chemical industry, Leuna wasn’t always this way. For a thousand years, it was just another village on the banks of the Saale. Today, we delve into the story of Leuna. We will uncover how it transformed into a hub of modern technology and chemical innovation.

Leuna’s journey took a significant turn in 1917. BASF, a major chemical company, established a factory here. Its initial purpose was the synthesis of ammonia. This marked the beginning of Leuna’s long association with the chemical industry. Methanol production soon followed. Later, the mineral oil industry took root. This industry became vital in East Germany.

After German reunification, VEB Leuna-Werke Walter Ulbricht was divided. Smaller operations emerged and were sold off. Leuna transformed into a modern chemical industry site. InfraLeuna GmbH now manages the infrastructure. It oversees everything from power plants to water supplies. Roads, rail transport, the fire service, and property management fall under its care.

Many companies have chosen to locate in Leuna. Some even supply chemicals to their neighbors. One such supplier uses phosphoric acid. It also uses sulfuric acid and potassium hydroxide. The company needed a safe way to meter these aggressive liquids.

To solve this challenge, the company chose a ProMinent metering system. This system featured four diaphragm metering pumps. They were from the Orlita MfS 80/30 product range. These pumps can deliver between 7 and 100 liters per hour. This is at a back pressure of up to 180 bar. Manometers constantly monitor the back pressure. Safety valves provide extra protection. They relieve excess pressure if it gets too high.

Each pump has a double diaphragm. This hermetically seals the side that contacts the chemicals. This provides an extra layer of safety. A Micromaster 440 frequency converter adjusts the pump speed. It connects to the central control room via PROFIBUS.

The ProMinent system offers several benefits. It ensures pressure monitoring and safety. It provides reliable quality with metering precision. The system ensures economical operation with minimal maintenance. It also enables demand-based control without intervention.

Leuna stands as a testament to industrial evolution. It highlights the blend of tradition and technology. Its story is one of transformation. A small village became a center for chemical innovation.
