Did you ever hear of a mosque designed without a dome? Masjid Jami’ At Taufiq in Jakarta is such a mosque. It stands as a modern interpretation of traditional Indonesian architecture. Masjid Jami’ At Taufiq’s most striking feature is its towering roof. This design evokes the grand mosques of the Nusantara archipelago. This unique architectural style sets it apart from the typical domed or boxy mosques. The mosque’s facade is adorned with Islamic ornaments. These recite the Asmaul Husna, the 99 names of Allah. This beautiful calligraphy adds a layer of spiritual depth to the modern design. Masjid Jami’ At Taufiq was completed in 2021. The architects skillfully blended traditional and modern elements. They created a space that is both visually stunning and deeply meaningful. The mosque’s spatial design reflects the philosophy of Hablum Minannas Hablum Minallah. This emphasizes the importance of relationships between people and between humans and God. The first floor houses the ablution rooms, restrooms, an auditorium, and management offices. The auditorium serves as a versatile space for community events. It’s available for gatherings of all kinds, not just for Muslims. This reflects the mosque’s inclusive spirit. The second floor is dedicated to prayer. The towering roof creates a sense of awe and reverence. Inside, filigree ornaments enhance the Islamic architectural design. These also serve as natural ventilation. Skylights in the roof bathe the prayer hall in natural light. They create a dramatic ambiance. The mihrab, the niche indicating the direction of prayer, is made of solid black material. This is a symbolic reference to the Black Stone in the Kaaba. At night, spotlights illuminate the exterior, casting unique shadow patterns. The landscaping around Masjid Jami’ At Taufiq incorporates existing trees and a staircase leading to the second-floor prayer room. This staircase doubles as an amphitheater. It offers a place for discussions and contemplation. Masjid Jami’ At Taufiq was commissioned by Megawati Soekarnoputri, the chairperson of PDI Perjuangan. It stands as a memorial to her late husband, Taufiq Kiemas.
