Established in 1934 Mac.Robertson Girls’ High School stands proudly. It’s a testament to academic excellence. This prestigious institution boasts a rich history. It began its journey much earlier. It started as the Melbourne Continuation School in 1905. This was Victoria’s first government-funded secondary school. Located on Spring Street the school aimed to level the playing field. It addressed social and cultural inequities. It ensured that all students had access to university regardless of background.

The school was renamed Melbourne High School in 1912. In 1927 it became single-sex. The girls remained in the old building. This building was condemned. It was a cramped space. The girls continued their education there. They were led by the headmistress Christina Montgomery. She had led the girls since 1923. The Depression threatened the school’s existence. New suburban schools were opening. The school moved to Government House in 1931. Then in 1933 they relocated to State School No 1689 in King Street.

Macpherson Robertson’s generous donation changed everything. A new building was constructed in Albert Park Reserve. The school opened as Mac.Robertson Girls’ High School on November 7 1934. Mary Hutton became the headmistress. During World War II the school served as army headquarters. Students attended classes in other schools. Hutton reassembled the school in 1943. Despite the disruption the school’s reputation grew.

Hutton led the school until 1948. She was a high performer yet underpaid. She was finally recognized as a Principal in 1945. Ruby Gainfort took over in 1949. There were 700 students. She created a relaxed atmosphere. She knew each student by name. Gainfort modernized the curriculum. She increased student participation. She retired in 1955.

The school building achieved national trust classification in 1987. It was previously listed as an Historic Building in 1982. In 2005 the school celebrated its centenary. They did so jointly with Melbourne High School. Premier Steve Bracks attended. The school clock tower was restarted. It failed to start on time.

Mac.Robertson Girls’ High School continues to thrive. It is a beacon of academic excellence. It provides opportunities for girls in years 9-12. It fosters a strong sense of community. It prepares students for tertiary study and leadership roles. This school is an enduring testament to the power of education and perseverance. Its legacy continues to inspire.
