Reflect on a time when public baths were more than just places to wash. They were social hubs. We are standing before the İcadiye Dağ Hamamı. This historic Turkish bath whispers tales of a bygone era.

The İcadiye Dağ Hamamı is located in Üsküdar’s Kuzguncuk neighborhood on İcadiye Hamamı Street. Arif Hikmet Bey commissioned its construction in 1854. He intended it to generate income for his library in Medina. It represents a single hamam type.

Let’s step closer. Imagine the sounds. Hear the echoes of conversations. Sense the warmth radiating from within. The İcadiye Dağ Hamamı stands as a testament to Ottoman social life. It is also a source of revenue for religious and cultural institutions.

Note the architecture. The İcadiye Dağ Hamamı features a stone-paved courtyard. A wide arched doorway leads to it. This then leads to a dressing room. The dressing room has two stories. Its walls are made of layered stone. The ceiling and interior are wood. Twelve wooden columns support the upper floor. Rooms are upstairs. An octagonal pool sits in the center of the room. Light streams in through a roof lantern. Eight candle holders adorn the wooden columns.

The İcadiye Dağ Hamamı also features an intermediate area. A toilet and cleaning area are to the left. A large dome covers the main bathing area. Two private chambers are inside. There is no sofa. But there is a navel stone. Eleven taps line the walls. The dome rests on four arches and corner vaults. This creates an octagonal dome base. Like the dressing room the hamam is made of layered stone.

The İcadiye Dağ Hamamı underwent extensive repairs in 1905 and 1970. Its most recent restoration concluded in 2018.

Did you know that the İcadiye Dağ Hamamı is the only remaining hamam in Üsküdar that belongs to a foundation? There is no inscription anywhere on it.

Arif Hikmet Bey gifted over 5000 books to the library. This library still operates today. It no longer has any connection to the hamam. Anadolu Kadiaskeri Kethüdazade Mehmed Arif Molla died in 1849. Arif Hikmet Bey bought forty chests of handwritten books from his estate. He then dedicated them to his library in Medina. The hamam was repaired from its own foundation in 1905.

Today the İcadiye Dağ Hamamı serves as a social facility. The restoration work was completed by the Üsküdar Municipality. It reopened on September 2 2023.

The İcadiye Dağ Hamamı stands as a reminder of Istanbul’s rich cultural heritage. It showcases the importance of public spaces in Ottoman society. It is now a place where history and community converge.
