Gazing at the San Antonio Abad Parish Church, can you sense the echoes of history whispering through its walls? This church, nestled in the heart of Maybunga, Pasig City, Metro Manila, isn’t just a building. It’s a living testament to time, faith, and the enduring spirit of a community. San Antonio Abad Parish Church traces its roots back to January 17, 1572. That’s when Augustinian missionaries, led by Fr. Alonzo de Alvarado, sailed down the Pasig River. They arrived in Maybunga on the feast day of San Antonio Abad, thus dedicating the future church to him. The area, even then, was a vibrant community with its own leaders. Some believe it was possibly the very settlement founded by Dayang Kalangitan and Gat Lontok long before the Spanish arrived. The church building itself is a blend of old and new. The original chapel, built centuries ago by Spanish missionaries and local residents, still stands as part of the larger church complex. This chapel holds the statue of San Antonio Abad, the patron saint of the community. He is revered for his intercession in bringing good harvests, progress, and prosperity to the people. The San Antonio Abad Parish Church was formally erected as a parish on December 21, 1985. Today, the church continues to serve as a spiritual anchor for the community. Mass is celebrated regularly, with services in both Tagalog and English. You can find the current mass schedule online. The San Antonio Abad Parish Church is more than just a place of worship. It’s a symbol of the rich history and enduring faith that defines Maybunga. It is a reminder of the enduring power of community and the blend of cultures that have shaped this place.
