Ever wondered about the origins and beliefs of the Gereja Kerasulan Baru right here in Jakarta? The Gereja Kerasulan Baru, or New Apostolic Church, has a fascinating story. It is rooted in a schism that took place in Hamburg Germany in 1863. This split led to the formation of what was then known as the “General Apostolic Mission of Christians”.

Today the Gereja Kerasulan Baru sees itself as a re-establishment and continuation of the early Apostolic Church. Its leaders consider themselves successors to the original twelve apostles. This concept shares similarities with Restorationism in some ways. Premillenarianism and the Second Coming of Jesus Christ are central tenets. Most of its doctrines align with mainstream Christianity. Its liturgy, in particular, resembles Protestantism. The church’s hierarchy and organization bear resemblance to the Roman Catholic Church.

Let us talk a little more about its history. In the 18th century, some theologians and Christians felt existing churches lacked the gifts and activities of the Holy Spirit. Revival movements emerged in England and Scotland around 1830. These groups sought a renewed outpouring of the Holy Spirit through prayer. On the night of October 31 1832 a prayer meeting was held at Mr. Irving’s house. John Bate Cardale prayed fervently for the Holy Spirit. Drummond then approached Cardale and said with great power “Convey the Holy Ghost for art thou not an Apostle?”

By July 1835 eleven more apostles were called alongside Cardale. One declined the calling. On May 23 1835 a prophecy declared that the fourteenth day of the seventh month was set aside by God to dedicate 12 Apostles to their work. On July 13 1835 another prayer meeting was held. They requested a twelfth apostle. God answered their prayer. Eleven apostles chose two men. Duncan Mackenzie was called as an Apostle.

The Gereja Kerasulan Baru acknowledges the Apostle ministry. It believes in the sacramental nature of Holy Communion and baptism. It regards the Bible as the authority of God’s Word. The church also believes in Christ’s second coming and the gifts of the Holy Spirit.

In December 2012 the Gereja Kerasulan Baru published its catechism which explains the church’s doctrines in detail. The Gereja Kerasulan Baru gives high authority to the Bible. The church officially uses the New King James Version since 1998. Apostles are responsible for overseeing its interpretation. They interpret the Bible similarly to Protestants and Catholics with exceptions for Holy Sealing and beliefs about the deceased.

The Gereja Kerasulan Baru recognizes three sacraments. These are Holy Sealing Holy Baptism and Holy Communion. Baptism with water is the first act of grace from the Trinity to those who believe in Christ. Through Holy Sealing baptized believers are filled with the Holy Spirit. This happens through prayer and the laying on of hands by an apostle. The body and blood of Christ are shared during Holy Communion.

The Gereja Kerasulan Baru emphasizes the importance of personal responsibility for their actions. Members are accountable to God for their behavior. The Gospel of Christ and the Ten Commandments provide clear guidance.

The Gereja Kerasulan Baru is politically neutral and independent. It is funded by voluntary donations from its members. The church abstains from political statements. It expects members to obey the laws and civil obligations of their respective countries. The church prioritizes evangelism and the care of individual members. It also engages in charitable activities. The Gereja Kerasulan Baru strives to manage its administrative affairs efficiently. A large portion of its income goes towards building and maintaining church buildings.
