“Arsløf.” Does that sound familiar? That’s what Årslev was called in 1203. Årslev is a western neighborhood in Aarhus. It was once a small village. Now let’s take a walk through time and discover Årslev.

Årslev’s history stretches back centuries. Local historian August F. Schmidt believed it was founded in the 4th or 5th century. Imagine early settlers establishing their homes here. By 1682 Årslev consisted of 14 farms. These farms cultivated over 534 tønder land. The land was assessed at 105.19 tønder hartkorn. They used a three-crop rotation system for farming. This was a common practice in those days.

Today Årslev is almost one with Brabrand. Before 1970 Årslev belonged to Brabrand-Årslev Sognekommune. The central point of Årslev is Årslev Kirke. It is officially called Sønder Årslev Kirke. This avoids confusion with Årslev near Randers.

West of Årslev village lies Årslev Kro. To the south is a new residential area. Here is Årslev Engsø with its nature areas.

In 1961 the main road 15 was expanded. This disrupted the village feel. Some farms were torn down. In the early 21st century Årslev was cut off from its fields. The Brabrand-Låsby motorway was built. In 2007 construction began on Logistikparken Aarhus. This is Northern Europe’s largest transport center. It also includes a large warehouse complex for Dansk Supermarked. All this was built on the village’s former lands.

The artist Jens Hansen-Aarslev lived most of his life in Årslev. A small street is named after him.

Årslev Engsø is worth a visit. Aarhus Kommune and Aarhus Amt created it in 2003. They diverted water from Aarhus Å and Lyngbygårds Å. Today the lake covers over 100 hectares. Its maximum depth is two meters. You can see frogs and birds there. You can walk around the lake on the path system. Enjoy the beautiful landscape.

In 1974, Årslev had 130 inhabitants. There were 80 buildings on 50 properties. Five buildings plus the church were considered worth preserving. Årslev was not destroyed by new housing. But the main road cut through it. Farms were rented out to car repair shops. They also served as warehouses for factories. But Årslev still offers a wide view to the south. You can see the Aarhus Å valley.

Årslev offers a blend of history and nature. From its early beginnings to its modern developments, Årslev has changed. Take a moment to appreciate its journey.
