Standing before this sprawling 86-acre site, we’re at Downe Activity Center, where the spirit of adventure has thrived for nearly a century. Imagine the echoes of Scoutmaster trainings, the splash of swimmers, and the laughter of campers ringing through the woods and fields. This place, nestled near Biggin Hill airfield, boasts a rich history; a history that intertwines with nature, community, and the spirit of exploration. Let’s travel back to 1929, when Downe Camp, a Scoutmaster Training Ground, opened its gates. The very first Gang Show in 1933, meticulously planned by Ralph Reader, raised funds to build the swimming pool, making Downe Camp even more appealing for Scout groups. This land, close to the legendary Charles Darwin’s home, provided the setting for his famous worm experiments; a bit of scientific intrigue in the heart of this adventurous space. During World War II, Downe Camp served as a base for the Home Guard, a reminder of the importance of this site in times of need. Do you know the story about the Providore? Sir Jeremiah Coleman, a committee member, and his wife gifted it to Downe Camp as a golden wedding anniversary gift. They also donated the clock from their stable block and contributed to the tower around it, a lasting contribution to Downe’s legacy. After the war, Rover Scouts tirelessly worked to restore this land to its original purpose – a Scout Camp. In 1987, Greater London South East Scouts took over the management, renaming it Downe Activity Center in 2005, making it one of the National Scout Activity Centers under the direct control of The Scout Association. This legacy was further solidified in 2007 during a special Blue Peter episode showcasing the Scouting 2007 Centenary. Over a hundred Scouts and Explorers, joined by the TV crew, participated in the program, putting Downe Activity Center on the national map. From 1989 onwards, Downe Activity Center has hosted a series of international camps called Campdowne, attracting Scouts and Guides from around the world. These camps, nestled among the woodlands and open fields, have offered a unique and unforgettable ten-day program of events and activities. These camps embody the spirit of Downe Activity Center – an engaging and inspiring space where memories are made and adventures are born.
