Hidden beneath Den Gamle By in Aarhus lies a treasure trove, Smykkeskrinet. It’s not filled with gold or jewels, but with something even more precious: a thousand pieces of 20th-century Danish silver jewelry. Imagine a collection so unique, experts call it “unparalleled” both in Denmark and abroad. Smykkeskrinet, meaning “jewelry box” in Danish, truly lives up to its name. This underground museum showcases the evolution of Danish jewelry design from 1900 to 2000. The collection tells a story of simplicity, functionality, and the interplay of light and reflection. It was lovingly curated over 40 years by a German couple, Marion and Jorg Schwandt, from Berlin. Their passion for Danish silver brought together a dazzling array of brooches, necklaces, rings, even shoe buckles and hat pins. Within Smykkeskrinet, you’ll discover masterpieces by renowned designers like Georg Jensen and Kay Bojesen. Other celebrated silversmiths such as Mogens Ballin, Thorvald Bindesbøll, and Marie Christiansen are also represented. The museum acquired this incredible collection in 2013 thanks to a generous donation from the Aage and Johanne Louis-Hansen Foundation. This donation not only allowed for the purchase of the collection, but also funded the construction of this subterranean showcase. So, as you explore Den Gamle By, remember the hidden gem beneath your feet. Descend into Smykkeskrinet and be captivated by the artistry and elegance of Danish silver.
