Seven families a dream a church. That’s the story of New Hope Christian Church in Dallas. Established July 27 1873 it stands as Dallas’s first Black church entirely organized and owned by Black people. Imagine prayer meetings in Sister Mattie Rainey’s log cabin. This humble beginning on the corner of Fairmount Street and Munger Avenue blossomed into a beacon of hope.

Reverend John Hay a traveling missionary helped organize this prayer group into a formal church. His tireless work laid a strong foundation. The church provided stability and respect to many Black citizens recently freed from slavery. The very existence of New Hope Baptist Church offered a safe haven a sense of community.

Subsequent pastors like Reverend R Griggs further strengthened the church’s position in the community. Reverend Griggs leadership was instrumental. He guided the church for over a decade. Reverend C N Pryor and Reverend W D Isaac followed. Each contributed to the church’s growth and success. Reverend Isaac’s leadership was especially noteworthy. He expanded the youth program promoted singing and taught social etiquette. He transformed the church into a vibrant center for community improvement.

Dr Alexander Stephens Jackson’s tenure was a period of significant growth. He was a distinguished scholar. He oversaw the construction of the first large brick church in Dallas built and owned by Black people. This building became a hub for cultural political and educational activities. Dr Jackson’s Patron’s League brought renowned speakers like Booker T Washington to Dallas. His son Reverend Maynard Jackson also served as pastor continuing the legacy of progress. Maynard Jackson Jr the first Black mayor of Atlanta grew up in this church.

The church faced challenges and transitions over the decades. Different pastors led the congregation each leaving their mark. Dr O M Locust a former professor brought his academic experience. He ensured continued positive community involvement. Reverend H Rhett James a dedicated educator played a crucial role in desegregation. He was the first African American to earn a Master of Theology from TCU.
