Perhaps, like me, you’ve noticed the warm glow emanating from Old Lodge Lane Baptist Church? It is more than just bricks and mortar. It’s a vibrant hub of faith, community and unwavering support.
Old Lodge Lane Baptist Church’s story began humbly in 1949. Mr. Vernon and Mrs. Connie Vail opened a Sunday School in their home. They lived on Old Lodge Lane. They were members of Purley Baptist Church. The school thrived. Soon, their home could barely contain the growing number of children.
As the 1950s progressed, the need for a dedicated space became clear. Surrey County Council offered a solution. They provided a site to any church willing to develop it. Purley Baptist Church accepted gratefully.
In July 1959, Old Lodge Lane Baptist Church officially opened. Connie Vail performed the opening ceremony. The building cost about 9000 pounds. Rev. David Kingdon became the church’s first pastor in February 1960.
David Kingdon departed in 1964. Geoffrey Richards succeeded him. He was ordained in July 1965. He remained until February 1967. During his time, a prefabricated hall was added in 1964.
Old Lodge Lane Baptist Church grew more independent during the 1960s. In 1961, four deacons were appointed. They oversaw business matters. By 1968, the Purley Baptist membership list was divided. Members at Old Lodge Lane took charge of their own affairs.
Leadership changes continued. Rev. A.J. Sleeman followed Geoff Richards. Then two members of Purley Baptist led the church. In 1969, Rev. John Pearse became pastor.
In 1971, Rev. John Maile was inducted. He stayed until late 1974. Rev. Bill Mumby from Purley Baptist took responsibility in 1975. He served for 13 years.
Old Lodge Lane Baptist Church expanded its community outreach. Youth groups, playschool and a children’s choir flourished. Space became an issue again. In the early 1980s, a new hall and kitchen were added. The cost was 51000 pounds.
Stephen Harrison became pastor in September 1992. He developed community activities. Further building work occurred in 1996.
Rev. David Murray led the 40th-anniversary service in 1999. He became the next full-time pastor. He was succeeded by Rev. Nigel Jones as Moderator in 2005.
In 2010, Nick Graves became the pastor. He leads the church. He brings Christ’s message of love to the community.
Old Lodge Lane Baptist Church is more than Sunday services. It’s a living, loving, learning community. It offers a Food Stop and Clothes Stop. The church provides practical support and debt counselling. The church adapts to societal changes.
Old Lodge Lane Baptist Church aspires to be a welcoming place. It desires everyone to thrive. It is a pillar of support in the community. It opens its arms to all. The church has activities throughout the week.
