Did a watchman’s lonely vigil once grace this spot? Here stands Csősztorony, a testament to Kőbánya’s rich viticultural past. Csősztorony, meaning “watchtower,” served as a vital defense against grape thieves and hungry birds in the 19th century. Imagine the scene. Lush vineyards carpeted these slopes. A lone figure perched atop Csősztorony, scanning the horizon. Their task was to protect the precious grapes. These grapes were the lifeblood of Kőbánya’s wine industry. Built in 1844, Csősztorony reflects the romantic architectural style of its time. Architects Zofahl Lőrinc and Brein Ferenc incorporated Gothic elements, creating a unique structure. The two-story building features a pitched roof guardhouse and a square tower. This tower is connected by a narrow passage. A spiral staircase winds upwards, leading to a viewing platform. From this vantage point, the watchman could survey the entire vineyard. They could spot any potential threats. By the late 19th century, phylloxera had decimated the vineyards. Csősztorony’s original purpose vanished. Yet, the tower remained. It found new life as a police station. In 1926, it was recognized for its historical significance and placed under protection. Today, Csősztorony stands as a reminder of Kőbánya’s agricultural heritage. It offers a glimpse into a time when vineyards thrived in this now urban landscape. The tower’s unique design, a blend of guardhouse and watchtower, tells a story of vigilance. It is a story of protecting a community’s livelihood.
