The Rektörlük building itself holds a fascinating story. It stands on the site of the Old Palace the first palace built by the Ottoman Turks in Istanbul. Mehmed II the conqueror himself resided here before moving to the Topkapı Palace. Imagine the Ottoman sultans pacing these very grounds. The building’s history extends beyond its Ottoman roots. The current structure which was completed between 1865 and 1866 was designed by the French architect Bourgerois. It later served as the Ottoman Ministry of War. The Blue Hall and Pink Hall on the second floor boast opulent orientalist decor. Enver Pasha’s desk still sits in what is now the Rector’s Office. This desk witnessed pivotal moments in the Ottoman Empire’s final years.

The Rektörlük was damaged in an earthquake in 1894. It was restored by Italian architect Raimondo D’Aronco then again in 1950 by Ekrem Hakkı Ayverdi. The most recent renovation in 1998 cleaned the facade and marble. The main gate of the Rektörlük building was even featured on the reverse of Turkish 500 lira banknotes from 1971 to 1984. A small detail perhaps but one that illustrates its enduring place in Turkish history.
