“Miracle on West 79th Street.” Have you heard that nickname? It speaks to the legacy of this place. We are standing before the First Church of Love and Faith. It is more than just a building. It is a testament to faith, community, and the enduring spirit of Chicago.
Founded on April 18 1980 the First Church of Love and Faith quickly became a beacon of hope. Archbishop Lucius Hall was the visionary behind it. He led the church for 40 years. The church initially began at Mt Pisgah Baptist Church in Bronzeville.
In July 1980 the congregation made a significant move. A grand motorcade of 425 cars accompanied the shift to the church’s present location. At that time the new building was valued at $500000.
Before establishing the First Church of Love and Faith Archbishop Hall honed his skills. He served as a spiritual radio announcer for 29 years at the First Church of Deliverance. There he worked under Reverend Clarence H Cobbs. Hall’s influence extended beyond the pulpit. He also served as national president of First Spiritual Churches of Truth Inc. The First Church of Love and Faith became its home base.
Many prominent figures graced the First Church of Love and Faith. Dr A R Leak and former Mayor Harold Washington visited here. The late Congressman Gus Savage also came here. Gospel singer Albertina Walker once served as mistress of ceremonies at an event here. The Barrett Sisters were also special guests.
Lucius Hall’s impact rippled through Chicago. He served as Chairman of the Personnel Board for Chicago in 1990. Mayor Daley appointed him to this role. His commitment to education led him to the University of Illinois at Chicago. Later he received an honorary doctorate from the Gospel Ministry Outreach Theological Institute.
After a life dedicated to service Archbishop Hall passed away in April. He was 87 years old. His passing was due to complications from COVID-19. In remembrance the city honored Archbishop Hall. They renamed a portion of 79th Street in his honor. This stretch lies between Damen and Campbell Avenues. The fellowship hall across from the church also bears his name.
The First Church of Love and Faith also includes a Head Start Facility. Interior renovations were completed in 2004. A playlot was installed in 2002. These additions demonstrate the church’s commitment to community development.
Today the First Church of Love and Faith stands as a living tribute. It honors Archbishop Lucius Hall’s vision. It continues to serve as a spiritual home. The church enriches the Auburn Gresham neighborhood. Remember the name Lucius Hall. Remember the “Miracle on West 79th Street.”
